CopyCatApp (“we”, “us”) is a Chrome extension that helps you create step-by-step guides and screen/video recordings. This policy explains what data the extension handles, why, and your choices.
Summary
- You can install CopyCatApp and it only processes data to provide its features.
- Recordings and screenshots you create are yours. Guides and videos download directly to your device; we do not keep copies on our servers. (An optional cloud save to your own Google Drive is planned as a future feature.)
- We collect a limited amount of account and usage data to run the service and understand how the product is used.
- We do not sell your data, we do not use it for advertising, and we do not use your recordings, screenshots, or guide content to train AI models.
What the extension accesses on your device
- Screen, window, or browser-tab content — only while you are actively recording, and only the surface you select. Used to produce the guide or video you asked for.
- Camera and microphone — only if you enable the webcam overlay or microphone for a recording. The feed is used to composite your recording and is not sent to us.
- Page content of the tab you record — to detect clicks/steps and capture screenshots for step-by-step guides.
This capture happens locally in your browser. It starts only when you press Record and stops when you stop.
Information we collect
- Account information. If you sign in, we receive your email address and basic profile information from your chosen provider (Google, Microsoft, or email magic-link), via our authentication provider Supabase. Used to create and secure your account.
- Usage analytics. Product events such as “guide created”, “guide exported”, “video recorded”, counts of guides/videos, timestamps, extension version, and an anonymous identifier. These events deliberately contain no content you authored — not the titles of your guides, not filenames, not the addresses of pages you visit. Used to operate and improve the product and to measure feature usage.
- Crash and error reports. If the extension or website hits an unexpected error, we record the error message, the technical stack trace, the version, and which screen it happened on. Used only to find and fix bugs. These reports are generated by our own code and are not sent to any third-party monitoring service.
- Website analytics. On our website (not the extension) we count page views and clicks on our own servers, along with the page path, referrer, campaign tags and country. No cookies are set, no advertising or third-party trackers are used, and we do not store your IP address.
- Feedback you submit. When you use the in-app feedback form, we store your message, the feedback type, your email, and a snapshot of your usage (guide/video counts, plan). Used to respond to and act on feedback.
- Guide content you create. Screenshots and step data for guides you build may be stored on our infrastructure (Supabase) so you can view, edit, export, and re-load them.
- Shared links. If you create a shareable link for a recording, we store the metadata needed to serve that link.
Where your recordings live
- Local downloads (PDF guides, video files) are saved directly to your device and never touch our servers.
- Planned: an optional cloud save that uploads recordings to your own Google Drive under a “CopyCatApp” folder, using the
drive.filescope (limited to files the app itself creates). This feature is not yet enabled; we will update this policy when it launches.
Google user data and OAuth scopes
If you sign in with Google, we request only:
email,profile— to identify your account.
We do not request access to your Google Drive or any other Google data. When the optional cloud-save feature launches, it will request the drive.file scope (files the app creates only), and this policy will be updated.
CopyCatApp's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We do not transfer or use Google user data for advertising, and we do not allow humans to read your data except (a) with your consent, (b) for security, or (c) as required by law.
How we use data
- Provide, maintain, and secure the extension's features.
- Understand aggregate usage and improve the product.
- Respond to your feedback and support requests.
We do not sell personal data, use it for advertising, or use your content (recordings, screenshots, guides) to train AI models.
Sharing
We share data only with infrastructure providers that operate the service on our behalf:
- Supabase — authentication, database, and storage.
- Vercel — website and API hosting.
We may disclose information if required by law.
Data retention
We keep account, usage, and feedback data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service. You can request deletion (see Contact). Recordings on your device are controlled and deleted by you.
Your choices
- Use the core recording and local-export features without signing in.
- Disable the webcam/microphone per recording.
- Sign out at any time.
- Request access to or deletion of your data by contacting us.
Children
CopyCatApp is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
We may update this policy; material changes will be reflected by the “Last updated” date.
